Koala Labrador Retriever Puppy Male in Lincoln, Nebraska

My story
***SPECIAL NEEDS FOSTER WANTED***Koala is a special needs hospice foster. He is almost 4 months old and has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus. This condition means that cerebrospinal fluid builds up in a dog’s skull which can put pressure on the brain. It’s referred to as “water on the brain”. ABOUT KOALAKoala is being treated proactively and preventatively for symptoms with steroids and he is doing very well. While he’s not “all there” cognitively, his foster mom says he engages and plays with his siblings, tries and occasionally succeeds in dragging his bed outside (to bask in the sun?), runs, scampers and dances arounds like a pincher crab on a beach, especially at mealtime. He does love food and treats - especially a little squirt of spray cheese. While he is scared and shy, he still has canine fun when he has a playmate so we would love to find him a foster family with a canine sibling. Having other dogs around really helps him come out of his shell. We are pretty sure he’ll get along just fine with cats. He’s been around big 60-70 pounds so he’s not scared and happy to run and jump and give them kisses. As a young puppy with cognitive challenges, he didn’t become acclimated to people so he is very wary of approaching people. When you pick him up, he does “freeze”. Once he settles on your lap he will promptly lay down and settle in for cuddles and most often he will soon fall asleep while you’re petting him. Koala would do best in a quieter setting without small children. INFOSome dogs like chihuahuas have a predisposition to hydrocephalus and it can be serious. There are surgeries that can be performed on milder cases but they can be very expensive but there is no guarantee that the condition will be cured and there is a good chance a 2nd surgery could be needed without a guarantee and the shunts can move in the skull, especially as puppies grow. While Koala’s behavior now is sweet and shy, he is doing quite well with house training but that may change if his condition worsens. Puppy pads or puppy diapers help. He may develop seizures, being circling or become blind. We are working closely with veterinarians to give Koala the absolute best, happiest, and healthiest life.As a forever foster, Brave will cover all related expenses. You just get to love him!
